Leipzig has many faces. The oldest trade fair place in the world looms large in music history. Today, it is also one of the hotspots for contemporary art. But Leipzig was also the place where many events took place which shaped world history. The independent-minded citizens of Leipzig brought the Communist East German regime down, suffered during the gigantic Battle of Leipzig which resulted in defeat for Napoleon and witnessed how the Leipzig Disputation made a split of the church inevitable.

During the Leipzig Disputation it became clear that Martin Luther’s views and the doctrine of the Catholic Church were too far apart.

Leipzig’s musical heritage is only rivaled by Vienna and many famous musicians have left their traces, creating a vital body of Protestant church music.
